Dignitas Personae - Instruction on certain Bioethical Questions
This doctrinal Instruction updating the teaching of the 1987 document Donum Vitae provides a response to new bioethical questions which have been the focus of expectations and concerns in large sectors of society. The instruction is meant for "all those who seek the truth" and with it the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith seeks both to contribute "to the formation of conscience"(n.10) and to encourage biomedical research respectful of the dignity of every human being and of procreation.

The dignity of the Human embryo is re-stated and the situation and status of the many frozen embryos that are by products of artificial fertilization are discussed. The Church's teaching on many new technologies is also outlined in areas such as stem cells, human cloning, human-animal hybrids and gene therapy. The Instruction is not a series of prohibitions but "expresses a great 'yes' to human life" (n.1).
